My last sentence begins 'it's not his fault.' If you think that's blaming him then some of the other concepts involved may not take root.

Srs though. I get where you're coming from. He may not have been racist - he probably was but big whoop given the period - , but what he put in to the world is a fundamental part of a massively racist culture and as such he's a legitimate target.

Ultimately, he's a tory so he can gtf.

(04-21-2020, 05:51 PM)Nicolas Sarkozy Wrote: Regardless of his own direct involvement in tormenting Africans, Walter Scott was part of a late 18th/early 19th century establishment that had been kept in place largely by the financial gains of the slave trade. It doesn't matter whether Scott himself was directly ordering Africans to be captured and sold as slaves, the point is the gallery's full of old white men who were kept in their positions of power by the slave trade.

I'd say it's particularly important to do this in the Portrait Gallery because it's so easy to be ignorant about Scotland's role in the slave trade. People associate Liverpool, Bristol and London as the main departure points for slave ships, but the entire Glasgow merchant economy also came from Caribbean slave plantations. I'd imagine the historically lower populations of descendants of slaves in Glasgow than Bristol or London means it's just not something people think about, and as far as I know it's not part of any school history curriculum.

I know there's been a campaign to change the Glasgow street names that are named after slaveowners fairly recently but not sure where they got to with it. You should read up on Scotland's role in the slave trade though - it's an important, albeit deplorable, part of our past.

Edit: aside from anything else, hadn't seen that clip before. Thought it was really well done.

I did learn about Scotland and the slave trade a bit when I was at Uni. Not claiming to be an expert like.

There's probably not many men or women of consequence before about 1900 in Scottish/British history that weren't a bit cunty in some way. Don't think that should stop their portraits being in the National Portrait Gallery though. They're important figures in our history  Jezza

Still think the actual content and delivery was the main problem though. Bit cringe worthy for me. Got nout to do with me not understanding symbolism Monty Oh You

There was a good bit on Frankie Boyles new BBC Scotland show about Glasgow's role in the slave trade.

Didn't go into great detail but specifically talking about the street names and what they mean to people.

Some guy's wife doing a ton15 on a lake, I think in Alaska. Laugh For modern snowmobiles that's fast. Most are 4-stroke and rarely hit that speed unless you get into the 1000+cc racing ones. My mate had a 700 2-stroke and that could shift. managed to get it up to somewhere between 115 & 120mph on new sea ice (extremely flat but with enough snow n the surface to get good traction). The noise and the vibration were ridiculaous and made it very difficult to look down at the odometer/speedometer. Your hood just naturally closed i around your head. Laugh Scary but very exhilarating.

My motor has been stolen from Farmer's in Musselburgh Muggy

Some boy has just walked in and taken the keys from behind the counter which was unattended. They've not even noticed and he's gone back later and stolen the car. Got a call from a withheld number yesterday from someone claiming to be from Farmer's telling me the car wouldn't be ready until tomorrow - clearly the boy buying himself time to go back and chore it.

He's obviously got my mobile number from whatever the keys have been in. Hopefully my address wasn't on it. Surely they're liable for the insurance under those circumstances?
