You'd think it was a second coming of MLK the way they're over-egging that speech.

Still, feels a genuine relief to have some kind of normality restored, albeit it's an unsatisfactory normality and however brief the respite might be.

It's aggravating to see such a mediocrity being heralded as some kind of savior when he's one of the main architects of many of the problems that led to Trump in the first place. Things will improve in some areas and some of the more egregious executive orders will be rolled back but they're also going to get worse in some places.

Foreign policy will be one - Trump's laziness and poor attention span had the unintended consequence of limiting the harm inflicted on the world by the US empire, at least in the sense no additional countries were bombed. Biden recognises Guaido as Venezeula's president so I'd expect Latin American coup no. 57 to happen under his watch and reckon they'll be some sort of military intervention in Iran.

Healthcare is another. Biden's already rolling back the campaign promise of a public option in favour of more subsidies for insurance companies. This just means more people will have insurance plans they can't actually afford to use. Here in New York the cheapest ACA plan is c.$400 a month with an $8000 deductible. Worse than useless. Biden's completely and utterly in the pocket of the health insurance ghouls so I expect that to get even worse under his watch.

Better than Trump, obviously, but I'm under no illusions over what another four years of milquetoast centrism will bring.

Apparently now threatening to form a third party to go after the Republicans who voted for impeachment/didn't support him enough.  

On the one hand the prospect of the right-wing in-fighting is hilarious as Trump has a lock on a fair portion of the GOP base, but on the other it's likely the Republicans will do what they did with the Tea Party and absorb the crazies by moving even further right. Then I fear the Dems will try to pick up those mythical moderates left behind by moving further right.

The battle will be on to inherit the Trump base, Cruz and Hawley's stunts leading up the insurrection were for that aim. Neither has a fraction of the charisma of Trump nor can claim that outsider status so pivotal in his 2016 victory. Nikki Haley will be another contender for the nomination but I don't see her winning.

The GOP is pretty fucked just now, they can't hope to win a primary without the lunatic core (it's not a fringe anymore) but Trumpism is poison in a general election. Unless Biden royally fucks things, I can't see any one of the Republican nominees having much chance in 2024. Even then, he's getting a ridiculously easy ride from the media just now. Already backtracking on key campaign promises but simply not being Trump buys a huge amount of goodwill.
